Explore the tropical oasis of Cairns, known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Escape the heat by swimming in the Esplanade Lagoon, which is set on the foreshore overlooking the Trinity Inlet.
Venture away from the city to see the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest, which is about a 2-hour drive north of Cairns. Take your time and stop in at the many walkways; keep your eyes open for kangaroos and endangered cassowaries. The Daintree Discovery Centre has a long Aerial Walkway, which looks over the wilderness and animal life. Keep driving until you reach Cape Tribulation, where you can spend hours walking through forest and sandy beaches.
Of course, you cannot visit Cairns without visiting the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system on Earth. Fly above it by booking a scenic flight, or book a boat cruise to be amongst the coral reefs and clays along the hundreds of continental islands. There are a range of day trips and multi-day trips available to suit different budgets. Get adventurous and choose to snorkel or scuba dive with the countless species of colourful fish, starfish, dolphins and turtles.
