Tips for first time motorhomers

From researching your dream travel destination and booking the activities, to stocking up on food supplies, there are many exciting things about planning your first-time self-drive holiday.

However, we also know things can be a little overwhelming. On top of planning and packing, the unknown of travelling in a vehicle you’ve never driven before can make things a bit more challenging.

To make things a little easier, we’ve complied our top tips for first timers. We hope they will help make your first self-drive trip a memorable one.

  1. Plan, plan and plan!

We love spontaneity, but for your first time, we would recommend planning your trip before you head off. This includes booking campsites and activities in the local area (particularly important during peak times) and even creating a rough travel route for designated driving days, factoring in rest and food breaks. We always recommend booking powered sites so you can use all of the motorhome features like heating, air-conditioning and the microwave.

  1. Don’t overpack

Travelling in a large vehicle means you have a lot more room for things compared to travelling in a car or a plane, so the urge to overpack can be very strong. We encourage first timers to create a packing list and stick to it. Remember, you always need half of what you think you do. At Let’s Go, we look after all of the essentials, including bedding, cooking utensils, chairs and tables – you only need to bring yourself, your clothes and any extra activities like puzzles, cameras and books.

  1. Share the driving load and don’t overdo the daily kilometres

This tip is for first timers and experienced travellers – always share the driving load! To make this easier, Let’s Go vehicles can be driven on a full standard license. While Let’s Go vehicles come with unlimited kilometres, we recommend you limit the number of kilometres you drive each day. That way, you’ll reduce driver fatigue and be able to make the most of all of the incredible destinations along your travel route.

  1. Make sure you’re across the vehicle dimensions

One of the biggest tips for first time motorhomers is to be aware of the size the vehicle. While driving an RV isn’t too different from navigating a large car or small van, it is important to be across your vehicle’s dimensions so you can avoid any low overhead structures and are comfortable when parking. This also extends to booking campsites – ensure the site is a good fit for your vehicle, including any awning set ups.

  1. Familiarise yourself with the motorhome

One of the best things about a self-drive vehicle is that you have access to your own toilet, shower and kitchenette. This also comes with the need to manage connecting water hoses and emptying your own toilet cassette. However, there is no need to fear! When hiring a vehicle through Let’s Go Motorhomes, our customer service team members will show you how to navigate these things before you hit the road and answer any questions you might have.
