The Big Pineapple

76 Nambour Connection Road,
Woombye Sunshine Coast QLD 4559

When you look up “kitsch” in the dictionary, there is a photo of the Big Pineapple. This could only exist in Queensland, where they actually think it is uber cool.

The initial idea of the Big Pineapple (probably the state fruit of Queensland) was to attract the attention of drivers to encourage them to stop in the middle of nowhere and see what was actually there.

Well, tick that box, Big Pineapple.

At 16 metres tall it is hard to miss. It is an iconic Queensland “must see” and it is now heritage listed meaning that it cannot be knocked down. Ever.

Built in 1971, the Big Pineapple was set up to demonstrate the pineapple farming process and it was also the home of CSR’s Macadamia Factory and Queensland Nuts for a while. It has had some ups and downs along the way, and has been destroyed by cyclones, fires and floods at various stages of its life.

The Big Pineapple and its Pineapple Train (fun for all the family!) are open every day. You can climb inside the Big One and there are some excellent views from the viewing platform. The train ride is outstanding – it is the steepest and curviest climbing track in Queensland and you will explore the rainforest, orchids and bamboo forest.

You will also be able to visit Wildlife HQ which showcases a range of native and exotic animals and you can actually interact with the animals.

The Big Pineapple hosts a music festival each year, usually around late May, so keep an eye on their website for details if that rings your bell.
